 Gustave Courbet, Selfportrait. |
A sweet revolutionary.
I am courbetist; my painting is the only worthy thing; I am the first and the only one ahead in my time. I have been accused of vanity. Of course, I am the most free and proud man on earth. These words by Courbet himself are eloquent enough to persuade us that this artist had serious troubles to be accepted. Nevertheless he had no problem to be seen as a leader: the leader of french Realism.
His painting raised important polemics because of his choosing of too common topics. He had to wait until the system of juries for being admited at Salon was abolished. He offered an exhibition parallel to Universal Exhibition. The Workshop stood out between his works. During the Comuna in 1871 was director of Arts.
